On and Under the surface - paper and cloth

Working in monochrome from small details taken from the environment around you we will collect and record both visual and sensory information and use this to create a rich resourse from which to develop ideas . Construct a mark and texture sketchbook using a variety of approaches; pierce, patch, knot, stitch and paint experimenting with many inventive ways of making marks, lines and textures. Explore and sample working into fabric. Then develop your recordings into abstract compositions using hand stitch and minimal colour. The focus will be on texture, mark, surface, repetition and rhythm.

You will come away with 

- Sketchbook work which will provide a resource for future as well as current use 

-Experiments in creating a surface on and under paper and cloth

-An abstract composition incorporating hand stitch derived from your recordings

The course will involve demonstrations , visual presentations, exploration and development of ideas and techniques, group and individual tuition and you will be encouraged to follow your own individual interests.
