Hawar institute of textiles
Forty years ago Harm Harms and Meinie Wardenier decided to pursue their shared passion for textiles. In addition to their teaching careers, they started a silk studio on a former cargo ship. What began with silk painting has grown into Hawar, an institution dedicated to nearly all textile techniques. The foundation of its success lies in the desire to pass on knowledge and experience—something that both of these skilled educators are deeply committed to. Today, Hawar is located in the former agricultural and domestic science school in the picturesque village of Oldeberkoop (Friesland, the Netherlands). Here, we develop and teach textile techniques using newly discovered materials and create fabrics for stores and fashion designers. In addition to Harm and Meinie, many guest instructors share their knowledge and skills through masterclasses and workshops. The spacious and light-filled studio, along with the extensive shop, inspiring gallery, and the beautiful Oldeberkoop surrounded by rich nature, make Hawar an exceptional learning environment.
Vezel magazine
We believe it's important to pass on knowledge and expertise in textile techniques, this is why hawar is one of the driving forces behind the volunteer organisation Vezel magazine. By translating (old) textile techniques into contemporary applications, we keep the textile craft alive, and through Vezel, we share and store this knowledge on paper. Everything that happens at Hawar and comes our way, we try to share through Vezel, passing on the skills and insights we've gained. We invite customers or instructors with inspiring projects to write about it, and we also document our own projects and experiments. Drawing on our expertise, we edit the articles to make them accessible to a wide audience. For more information, visit www.vezel.org.
