Experiment with the art of taking away
This workshop will deal with the concept of ‘less is more’, originally stated by the famous architect Mies van der Rohe and adopted by him as a way of life. This concept is not necessarily about minimalism. It is more about clarity and focus.
It is a natural reaction to add to your design – more colors, more images, more stuff – and the result is often visual noise and confusion.
We will explore the Japanese concepts of wabi-sabi (the beauty of imperfection), boro and mottainai (too good to waste) and kintsugi (the art of beautiful repairs).
Through a series of creative exercises we will practise limitation and the ‘art of taking away’. In stead of adding we will be asking, what we can remove in order to make a better composition.
We will work with both paper and fabric and experiment with different techniques to make surface design, including flour paste printing and gelatine printing.
